Egg Freezing in Georgia — Fertility Preservation for Women at GI Rimon Clinic in Batumi

Egg freezing is the way to keep open the possibility of a future pregnancy with eggs retrieved at a younger age. At GI Rimon clinic in Batumi we perform the whole process in-house — tests, ovarian stimulation, retrieval and freezing by vitrification in our own laboratory — under the supervision of Dr. Pavel Itsikson, embryology supervisor and the clinic’s representative in Israel. The process takes about two weeks, and eggs can be frozen without a medical reason as well.

Who it suits

Who is egg freezing suitable for and at what age

Age is the most significant factor: the younger the eggs are when frozen, the better their quality and the higher the chance of a future pregnancy from them. For women up to 35 the results are usually better, but the procedure may also be worthwhile in the late thirties, especially for those planning to postpone parenthood. Before the decision we assess the ovarian reserve (AMH and antral follicle count by ultrasound) and explain what the results mean for the timing and the number of cycles that may be needed.

Egg freezing without a medical reason (social freezing) suits healthy women who want to postpone parenthood for reasons of career, studies, the absence of a partner or personal circumstances. Medically, the procedure is intended for women before treatments that may damage fertility — chemotherapy, radiation or ovarian surgery — and in cases of endometriosis or an early decline of the ovarian reserve. If there is a genetic disease in the family, we perform the appropriate genetic tests before the process. The considerations are discussed in more detail in the article who should consider freezing their eggs.

The process

How the egg freezing process works at our clinic

  1. Consultation and tests

A meeting with the fertility doctor, hormone tests and ultrasound to assess the ovaries. Part of the tests can be done at home before the flight.

  2. Ovarian stimulation

Daily hormonal injections for 10–14 days, with ultrasound monitoring and blood tests at our clinic to follow the development of the follicles. Eggs can also be collected in a natural cycle without stimulation, but then only 1–2 eggs are obtained per cycle, so we usually recommend stimulation.

  3. Trigger injection

When the follicles reach the right size, an hCG injection is given to complete the maturation of the eggs.

  4. Egg retrieval

About 36 hours after the injection, under light anesthesia, through the vagina and under ultrasound guidance; the procedure takes about 20 minutes, and within two hours you can return to your hotel.

  5. Vitrification

Immediately after the retrieval the mature eggs are frozen by rapid freezing in our laboratory and stored in liquid nitrogen at minus 196 degrees.

The number of eggs worth keeping depends on age; sometimes two cycles or more are needed to reach the desired number, and we explain this according to your test results. The stay in Batumi — about two weeks, from the start of stimulation to the retrieval.

Comparison

Egg freezing or embryo freezing: which to choose

In egg freezing the eggs are kept before fertilization — the right choice when there is no partner or when you want to keep all options open. In embryo freezing the eggs are first fertilized by in vitro fertilization with ICSI, and the embryos are frozen after 3–5 days of culture; embryos survive thawing at high rates and their chance of a pregnancy is known already at the freezing stage, but they are tied to the sperm of a particular partner. The differences in detail and the price of a frozen embryo transfer are on the embryo freezing page.

Later on

What happens when you decide to use the eggs

When you decide on a pregnancy, the eggs are thawed and fertilized in our laboratory by ICSI — with the partner’s sperm or, if needed, with donor sperm — and the embryo is transferred to the uterus as part of an in vitro fertilization program. In medical cases where carrying a pregnancy is impossible, the frozen eggs can also be used in a surrogacy program at our clinic.

The chance of pregnancy depends mainly on the age at the time of freezing, the number of eggs and their quality. The vitrification method we apply maintains a high survival rate of the eggs on thawing, but no clinic can guarantee a pregnancy, and we do not promise a result — at the consultation we explain what is realistic to expect in your case.

Storage

Storage of the eggs: how long and under what conditions

The frozen eggs are kept in our laboratory in liquid nitrogen, at a temperature that stops all biological activity, so the length of storage does not affect their quality. The storage period, the conditions and the annual cost are agreed with you in a contract before the treatment starts, and the period can be extended later.

FAQ

Questions and answers

How much does egg freezing cost at your clinic?

We set the price individually according to the protocol and the tests required, and give a full quote at the first consultation, including the annual cost of storage. Prices are in euros.

Up to what age can eggs be frozen?

The decision is made according to the ovarian reserve and the tests, not by age alone. The earlier the freezing, the better, and for women up to 35 the results are usually better.

How long does the process take and how long do I need to be in Batumi?

About two weeks from the start of stimulation to the retrieval. The consultation and the initial tests can be done remotely and at home.

Is the retrieval painful?

The retrieval is performed under light anesthesia and takes about 20 minutes. Afterwards we monitor your recovery at the clinic.

How long can the eggs be stored?

The storage period is set in the contract and can be extended. The temperature in liquid nitrogen preserves the eggs for years.

Can eggs be frozen without a medical reason?

Yes. Social freezing is performed at our clinic after a medical examination, without the need for an indication.
