Sperm Donation and the Sperm Bank in Georgia — Donor Sperm for IVF and IUI at GI Rimon Clinic

Donor sperm is the solution when there is no partner or when the partner’s sperm does not allow fertilization. At GI Rimon clinic in Batumi we run our own sperm bank: the donors undergo medical and genetic screening and a semen analysis at our clinic before their samples enter the donor database, and you choose a donor by profile — appearance, blood group and test results.

Who it suits

Who are the donors in our sperm bank

We do not recruit donors as a separate service: our sperm bank serves our patients in fertility treatment at the clinic. Every donor undergoes the following tests at our clinic before his samples enter the database:

Test What is checked
Semen analysis (spermogram) Concentration, motility and morphology of the sperm cells, resistance to freezing and thawing
Tests for infectious diseases HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and others
Genetic testing Screening for genetic and hereditary diseases
Medical examination and interview with a doctor General health, family history, absence of hereditary diseases

The samples are stored frozen in liquid nitrogen in our laboratory, under the supervision of Dr. Pavel Itsikson, embryology supervisor and the clinic’s representative in Israel. Before use every sample undergoes quality control after thawing, and only samples of sufficient quality go into treatment. We keep a full profile for every donor: age, height and build, hair and eye color, blood group and test results.

Donor programmes

How to choose a sperm donor at our clinic

In an anonymous donation you receive no identifying details about the donor, but you see the full profile and choose according to what matters to you: an appearance similar to the partner’s, a compatible blood group, age. Our fertility doctor recommends the match from the medical point of view — for example, blood group and genetic screening results against the woman’s tests — to reduce the risk of genetic diseases. The extent of the visual information in the profile is shown at the first meeting, in accordance with the rules of anonymity; the donor’s identity remains confidential. Treatment with donor sperm starts only after personal matching with our fertility specialists.

A non-anonymous donation is also possible: a relative or acquaintance who agrees to donate undergoes exactly the same tests at our clinic, and only after medical approval do we start the treatment. A married woman using donor sperm needs the written consent of her husband, under Georgian law.

In detail

Who is donor sperm suitable for

  • single women who want to conceive without a partner;
  • couples in which the man has azoospermia — the absence of sperm cells in the ejaculate — or a severe impairment of the concentration, motility or morphology of the sperm cells;
  • couples in which the man has a hereditary disease that could be passed on to the child;
  • couples after repeated failures of ICSI with the partner’s sperm, when the embryos were of poor quality.

Before recommending a donation, we examine the man: a repeat semen analysis, hormone tests and, if necessary, a testicular biopsy — a short procedure under anesthesia — because sperm cells can sometimes be obtained and ICSI performed even in azoospermia. Quite a few couples discover this way that donor sperm is not needed at all. Read about diagnosis and treatment of male infertility on the separate page.

The process

How treatment with donor sperm works

Intrauterine insemination (IUI). Suitable when at least one fallopian tube is open and ovulation is normal. We follow ovulation by ultrasound — the monitoring can start at home — and at the time of ovulation we thaw the sperm sample, prepare it and inject it into the uterus through a thin catheter. The procedure takes about ten minutes, without anesthesia, and usually several cycles are needed.

In vitro fertilization with ICSI. Suitable when there is also a female factor, when insemination has not succeeded, or when you want a higher chance in a single cycle. After ovarian stimulation of about ten days and egg retrieval under short anesthesia, the embryologist injects a sperm cell from the thawed sample into every egg; the embryos grow for 3–5 days, the best-quality embryo is transferred to the uterus and the rest are frozen. Pregnancy test — about two weeks after the transfer.

If you would like another child from the same donor in the future — mention it at the first meeting, and we will check whether additional samples from the same donation can be reserved for you.

The law

The law in Georgia: sperm donation and anonymity

The donor is not mentioned in any official document of the child, and only the parents are listed on the birth certificate — or the mother alone, in the case of a single woman. We draw up the agreements between the clinic, the donor and the patients in writing, before the program starts. The legal information is correct as of September 2026; the legislation may change, and we update the page.

FAQ

Questions and answers about sperm donation

How much does sperm donation cost at your clinic?

The price of the sperm is included in the program: IVF with ICSI and donor sperm — €5,000 without medication and tests, €8,500 including them. The price of insemination with donor sperm is given after the first meeting. A difference of up to 10% is possible.

Are the donors anonymous?

Yes, unless you come with a known donor. You receive a full profile — appearance, blood group, age, test results — but no identifying details, and the donor receives no information about you.

Can we choose a donor by appearance or see a photo?

You choose by the profile: height, build, hair and eye color, blood group and age. The extent of the visual information is shown at the first meeting, in accordance with the rules of anonymity. Contact us and we will explain exactly what you will see; more about choosing an egg donor is on the egg donation page.

Can a single woman receive donor sperm at your clinic?

Yes. Insemination or in vitro fertilization with donor sperm is available at our clinic to women without a partner as well, and only the mother is listed on the birth certificate.

How long does the treatment take and when do we need to come to Batumi?

For insemination — a few days around ovulation, one cycle every month. For IVF — two to three weeks in Batumi, or less if the monitoring starts at home. The first transfer usually takes place within three months of the first contact.

I want to become a sperm donor. How do I apply?

Recruiting donors is not a separate service of ours, but we do review applications from candidates. Contact us through the contact form and state that it concerns a donation; the team will get back to you with the list of tests and the conditions.

The information on this page is for information purposes only and does not replace personal medical advice. Suitability for treatment with donor sperm is determined by a medical examination, and prices and conditions may change. For up-to-date information contact the GI Rimon team.
